Earth Market

The first Slow Food market Austrias

In the context of our series ”To Market We Go“, our trips to Europe‘s most exceptional markets take us to the beautiful Burgenland region that is known for its special wine and many more culinary delights.

The Burgenland is located in the eastern part of Austria bordering Slovakia in the North, Slovenia in the South and the entire Hungarian border. The Burgenland offers an exceptional variety: vineyards, nature parks and green landscapes as far as the eye can see, excellent wine and other regional specialities.

Together with Kitchen Stories and Melanie Zechmeister, also known as “Das Mundwerk”, we will discover the ”Markt der Erde“, Austria’s first Slow-Food market. Slow Food – this means regional, fairly produced and traded food. The “Markt der Erde” is located in a former, converted goats barn and attracts visitors with its big offer of fresh, seasonal produce.

Some of it, we will take to Berlin in order to prepare a savoury strudel in our next125 kitchen.

Furthermore, we meet up with Monika Liehl, the founder of the ”Earth Market“, and learn why she has dedicated her whole life to the Slow Food movement.

A visit to the production site of Rankel offers us insights into the production of regional walnut specialities. We will also discover the soy fields and the manufacture of Manufaba. And last but not least, we will review our impressions of the “Earth Market” while having a hearty snack in the vineyards. There, we enjoy both the great wine and view.
